Keeping Your Pet Cool
The importance of keeping your pet cool in hot weather and what to do to keep them cool.
Spring is here and Summer is right around the corner! What are you doing to keep cool? Jumping in the pool or ocean, staying indoors with the aircon on, keeping hydrated? We all get hot during the warmer months, but can you imagine trying to keep cool with a jacket on? Your furry friends feel the heat too so here are some tips on keeping them cool as well!
1. Keep Hydrated
The most important thing for any living creatures is to keep hydrated. We are made up of water and if we spend time in the sun, we need to replenish our water source. It’s the same with your pets, they love sun baking but can’t call out for a refreshment if they get too hot. Always make sure your pet has access to clean fresh water, the more the better, we know they can be clumsy and if they knock over one they will need some more, leave a few bowls of water out in shady places, this will also encourage them to rest in the shade
2. Make sure there is plenty of accessible shade
Who doesn’t like a midday nap on a hot day? Make sure there are plenty of shady places for your pet to rest on hot and sunny days. On humid days when you’re inside with the aircon on bring them inside to enjoy the cool. With little pets in cages, always make sure they’re in a shady well-ventilated area or bring them inside the laundry, they’re not always able to seek out cooler places in a fixed cage.
3. Walk your pets in the morning or evening
Walking your pet in the early morning or early evening will help avoid the hottest parts of the day. Make sure you test the ground with the back of your hand, so they don’t burn their paws on the ground or dehydrate from a long hard walk in the hot sun. If the ground is too hot for you it’s too hot for them!
4. Don’t leave your pet in a hot car
Parking your car in the shade with the windows down won’t stop your pets from overheating. Even if its 22 degrees outside it can be 47 inside the car. Even dogs on the back of a ute can burn their footpads on the tray bed. It’s important not to leave your pets alone in a car in hot weather.
5. Have fun in the sun!
If you’re going to the beach find a dog friendly beach you can take your dog (or cat) to. Just make sure you only go when the sand is not too hot, set up in a shaded area and bring plenty of hydration for you and your furry friends.
These five steps will help keep your pet cool in this hot weather. It’s great to have fun in the sun with our pets but we have to make sure their needs are met as well, check every morning they have full waterbowls, plenty of shade and don’t take them out in the middle of the hot day unless necessary.
