What is the Best Food for your Cat?
Eating healthy to stay well is important for both ourselves and our families. While we love a good binge on junk now and again, eating the right foods most of the time is the best way to stay on top of our health. SO the same goes for your pets. Like us, they require certain nutrients to help keep them healthy and in the best shape. There are so many different cat foods on the market and it can be difficult to know which ones are best to be feeding your cat. So the question is, what is the best food for your cat?
We’ve put together some considerations for you to consider when choosing food for your furry pal.
Avoid Dry Food
Dry biscuit foods are often referred to as the equivalent of junk food for cats. There are a number of reasons that dry food is not recommended for cats including high carbohydrate content. Although the carbohydrates might give your cat a quick burst of energy, it does not have the nutritional value that is needed for a healthy cat.
Another reason that dry food is not an ideal option for your cat is that most are plant based. Cats are carnivores and are also predatory animals. This means that most of the food they require for both surviving and striving comes from animal based products. By filling them up on plant based products they may not fulfil their nutritional requirements.
Did you know that 1 in 50 cats suffer from diabetes? Due to the ingredients in many dry food products, they can contribute to diabetes and cats becoming over weight.
Fresh & Homemade
If you have the time and resources available making your own food at home for your pet is ideal.
Use fresh meats and fish to make meals for your cats. When buying premade cat food that contain fish products you run the risk of high level of water toxins and heavy metals. If you are using fish that is fit for human consumption you are reducing this risk.
If you can use organic meats – even better.
Protein based foods
If a protein such as poultry or red meat is not listed as the first ingredient on the store bought products, choose a different one.
Due to the nutritional requirements of cats, they need to be eating protein. If it is not the main ingredient in the product than chances are that it is filled with other by products that will not provide your cat with what they need to live a healthy life.
Avoid grains
Like with dry foods, the various grains will only provide your cat with a load of carbs and no actual benefit to them. Avoiding products that contain wheat, corn, rice and other grains will help your cat fill up on the right ingredients. A cats digestive tract is not the same as ours and they will have trouble digesting the grains. This can cause issues down the track with their digestion, stomach and bowels.
The next time you are at the supermarket or the pet store looking to buy your cat their next lot of dinners, take the time to look at the product ingredients lists. Understand what is in each of the products before you buy them. Don’t just buy a product because it is cheap or you have seen it advertised somewhere. Do your research and provide your kitties with the best possible food for their nutrition and health. A good diet will help keep your pet healthier and happier for longer.
